Usability Research & Assessment Work

January 2018 - April 2018

SunPort is a smart plug device used to track and offset energy use through the purchase of solar renewable energy credits, called SunJoules. In conjunction with the SunPort app, users can see their energy consumption and offsets, renew subscription services, and consume other information about their energy use. During my winter semester at the University of Michigan School of Information, I had the pleasure of working with a team of four other students under the name Team Sol to evaluate the current condition of the SunPort mobile application via interviews, surveys, heuristic critiques, and usability tests, to name a few methodologies.

Project Summary:

Alongside key usability readings such as "Observing the User Experience" by Elizabeth Goodman, as well as specific studies in Heuristics from Jakob Nielsen, my team and I completed a number of tasks to better understand the SunPort app and its target population. These methods, described in the video below, included an Interaction Map, Competitive Analysis, Qualitative Interviews, a Survey, Heuristic Evaluations, and finally, Usability Tests.
